  12.         Early this morning Margot Smythe, a bar maid at the West
  13.         Landing Pub, was found strangled in her room.  Clutched in the
  14.         dead girl's hand was a gold sovereign; and an empty box, marked
  15.         "Hillery's", from an expensive pair of French nylons was found
  16.         in the girl's wastebasket.  Inspector Lestrade also noticed that
  17.         the cuckoo clock in the room was broken, and the bird was missing.
  18.  
  19.         Maxwell Torchfield, the barkeep at the West Landing, says that a
  20.         bearded man in a grey coat was seen entering Margot's room last
  21.         night.  By accident, one of Lestrade's men found a grey coat and
  22.         a false beard in the trash can behind the house of Sir Bertram
  23.         Lampfelt of Park Lane.
  24.  
  25.         Sir Lampfelt's wife, Constance, claims the coat and beard weren't
  26.         there last night when she carried the garbage out and took her
  27.         poodle, Fifi, for a walk.
  28.  
  29.         One of Margot's boyfriend's, a merchant sailor named Lars McSwade,
  30.         was found drunk this morning in the alley behind the pub.  Though
  31.         he was wearing his dress uniform, McSwade had no necktie.  McSwade
  32.         claims the last thing he remembers is tripping over a poodle that
  33.         was running free behind the West Landing last night.
  34.  
  35.         Scotland Yard wants to know:

  90.         victim's apartment to confront her.  After a heated argument,
  91.         Constance strangled the victim with her poodle Fifis leash.

  93.         Realizing what she had done, she ripped the microphone and the
  94.         bird from the cuckoo clock and fled.  When her husband learned
  95.         of the bar maids death, he disposed his fake beard and grey
  96.         coat disguise that he had used when visiting the victim.
